A Visit From Cousin Tom

This article actually overlaps a bit with the previous one. Helga and I had been working feverishly to finish getting her house ready for sale before Tom arrived. Tom was out on the west coast for a wedding, and he was coming to visit after that, so there was no postponing his visit a few days.  The issue is we just weren't going to be done with Helga's house before Tom arrived. I let him know a few days before what the required agenda was going to be, but he was all for pitching in and helping us finish. Tom arrived as planned, we spent the evening at home, and then drove over Donner Pass to Helga's. We spent three very long days finishing up the house. Then on to the boat! We got to the boat in the afternoon, spent the night on the boat, and went out sailing the next day. As is my usual custom, I let my guests take the helm for as much as they want. I think Tom enjoyed driving.  To his credit, Tom drove mostly by hand, but in the photo he is figuring out the auto...

Done With The Chores

This past winter, it was time to tie up some loose ends. I had been retired for a while and was finally back to full health. The big loose ends were pieces of real estate. Rather than pick at them over time, I decided to forgo enjoyable pursuits and just work at them until they were done. That meant no hiking, no snow shoeing, no boat (!!!), no fun weekends, until they were done. But...  Helga's former home... SOLD! The barn on an acre... SOLD! Jim's rental home... SOLD! We aren't footloose and fancy free, yet; Helga still plans to work for another year and I have loads of projects still to finish our house, not to mention the landscaping, but it can be back on a voluntary schedule, mixing house projects, boat projects, and, I'm hoping, boating adventures! < Previous Article     Next Article >
