The Hawaii Cruise, Part II

Anchored off the coast of Lahaina, Maui, with tender operations underway. [Note: If you didn't read Part I yet, you can read it  here .] We arrived in Lahaina, Maui the next morning. Helga was still recovering and I was feeling a bit tired. Still, Maui was going to be the best chance to get in the water and swim with the fishes, just about my favorite thing to do. Helga decided she wouldn't be getting in the water, but she was happy to sit on the beach while I was swimming. We decided to take a walk about a mile up the coast from the center of Lahaina to Mala boat ramp and pier. It is supposed to be a great place to see turtles. A tender from Grand Princess arriving in Lahaina We had a nice walk up the coast and arrived at a stretch of beach near where I wanted to go snorkeling.  Mala Pier isn't that big anymore, but it used to extend about a quarter mile out into the water. The abandoned portion that exists only underwater has become a  cleaning station for sea turtles....

The Hawaii Cruise, Part I (2/21/2020 - 2/26/2020)

Sunrise from the stern of the Grand Princess a couple of days into the cruise [Blogger's note: I wrote this post a year ago, never quite finished it, so it didn't make it to the web site. I am getting into the mode of posting again, and when I came back to the blog editor, the story was still just sitting here. I figured, what the heck, go ahead publish it. I broke it into a few parts because it's pretty long. -03/23/2021] Helga made the decision to retire early, in January 2020, during the fall of 2019, a decision driven by the passing of our young boat neighbor and friend Sam, along with other factors. I thought it would be nice to give her a retirement present. Yes, we have our own boat that is suitable for long distance cruising (San Francisco to Hawaii is a 12 to 20 day trip one way for us) but long distances are more of an adventure than a vacation. We have plans to start cruising this summer, but I thought Helga might like going to Hawaii, a place she has never ...

February 2020 Schedule

The big boat related activity this month is getting a bigger access hole to the aft lazarette. This hatch, on the starboard side of the stern, is one way into the lazarette. Viewed with the hatch open, you can see the opening isn't very wide, about 9". 02/07          On the boat. 02/08          Frank is helping me move the boat to  KKMI for a modification to the deck to make a bigger access hole for  the lazarrette. We are moving the boat Saturday because it's supposed to be really windy on Sunday. 02/09          Hanging around at KKMI waiting for Monday. 02/10 - ?     Starting the deck modification. ? - 2/21       Back in our home marina. On the boat until we leave on another boat for a Pacific trip. < Previous Article    Next Article >

I Got A Name!

We finally got the name on the boat! We put the name on from the dock. but had to use the dinghy to change the hailing port on the stern. We picked the boat name in June 2017 and used it when we registered the boat with the US Coast Guard. The Coast Guard registration states that the registration is not valid unless the boat name and hailing port specified in the registration documents are appropriately visible on the boat hull. Well, we were originally going to get a local artisan who specializes in this sort of thing to apply the lettering and some graphics to do the work. After a few months of phone tag and being no closer to getting it done, that idea fell by the wayside, with no new plan replacing it. And it's no big deal unless you get stopped by the Coast Guard for a boat inspection. For all I know, it's no big deal even then. Two years later, I got tired of being nervous every time a USCG boat was in sight, and hunted for an online boat lettering supply. BoatUS, ...

Green Rosetta tied up in Pillar Point Harbor, just north of the town Half Moon Bay, on the California Coast south of San Francisco. Helga and Gary waving from the cockpit. December 2019 Schedule

The tidal marsh land on the south cost of Richmond, near the marina. San Francisco across the bay in the background. Helga had been planning to call it quits at the school district in June 2020, but because of of some recent events and a reassessment of our retirement preparation, she moved the retirement date up to Christmas, so her last day with the school district is December 20. This means we don't have to do one-and-three-quarter day weekends on the boat. Yay! The next two weekends look pretty sketchy weather-wise and not worth the drive for a short weekend. 12/21 - 12/30  On the boat for the holiday period, with some day trips to visit family. No specific plans in this period except there will be some sailing, some boat maintenance, and some downtime. I definitely need to get my SCUBA tanks filled and check/replace the zincs on the prop shaft and prop. Some bottom scrubbing is always in order. There is a possible visit from the Canadian contingent at the ...
