Go Sailing: The ASA App Works!

After a day sail: L-R Scott, Jim, Michael, Helga, Anita J ust a quick post about the American Sailing Association (ASA) mobile device app Go Sailing, that helps match up boat owners with those desiring crewing spots. Sort of like Meetup, but just for sailing. ( ASA GO SAILING app) It looks like I might not be working the same schedule as Helga, so from time to time I might need crew other than Helga, and it's nearly always good to have an extra hand aboard if things get "complicated". Sailing buddies, new and old, are always welcome. I posted a sailing for the Memorial Day holiday through the Go Sailing app looking for crew, and got responses from Michael, Anita, and Scott. All three showed up to sail, and we did a clockwise trip around Angel Island. This involved going south of Alcatraz to get a good lay line around the western tip of Angel Island. What started out as 5 knots of wind near the marina turned into 22 knots of wind in the slot, with the wind getting...

A Second Canadian Invasion: Updated

Back in the marina at the end of the trip. L-R, Helga, Anna Marie, David, Jim. Photo credit goes to dock neighbor Sheldon T his story is just a placeholder until I get some photos from David. The photo above is the only one on my camera from the the visit. Update: OK, I have had the photos for a while, well, quite a while, but for one reason or another there have been a few detours before I could get to this. David and Anna came down for Memorial Day weekend. On Friday, they joined us, along with Jane and Frank, for a day outing on the bay. That usually means some sailing, some anchoring at either Paradise Cove or Richardson Bay, and a nice lunch.  Jane makes these wonderful salads. If almost everyone is forward, who is driving? I think it must be Jane, or maybe the autopilot. It's been quite a while now, so I don't remember the particulars very well. I will just comment on some pictures.   It looks like we cruised out to the Golden Gate. We had some ni...

Ayala Cove, finally

Ayala Cove at Angel Island in the San Francisco Bay. Angel Island is a few miles north of Alcatraz and is much bigger and prettier than Alcatraz, unless you find old prisons pretty. And yes, that is Green Rosetta on the end tie. The view of Ayala Cove is from a little way up the North Ridge Trail. A ngel Island is only five miles from where Green Rosetta lives most of the time, an hour or less motoring, less than that by sail on a good day.  The whole island is a state park, hilly, covered in trees, the biggest island in the San Francisco Bay, with amazing views just about any place you look. We have been intending to visit Angel Island since last fall.  All our plans to visit have been cancelled for one reason or another. We actually tried to catch a mooring there one time in February, but we ran soft aground twice in the attempt, and never got closer to the mooring ball than about 20 feet. It took a lot of engine power to get us back out to water where we were flo...
