November 2017 Schedule

Yes, it's Photo Shopped It looks like we will be on the boat two long weekends in November. 11/10 - 11-12 11/9     Thursday, on the boat at around 6PM. 11/10   Friday, head over to Paradise Cove, drop anchor, and mess around with the dinghy. We have never used the dinghy from anchor or mooring, so we might as well figure it out and get used to it. 11/11   Saturday, going to Ayala Cove, Angel Island, departing pretty early. Spending the day hiking around Angel Island, maybe we will bring our bicycles. Overnight on a mooring in Ayala Cove. 11/12   Sunday morning depart Ayala Cove, return to Richmond MBYH by 12:00 noon. No guests currently planned for this weekend. 11/23-11/26 11/22    Wednesday, on the boat about 10:30 PM. 11/23    Thursday, headed for Pillar Harbor, Half Moon Bay, at 8:00 AM. Not sure if it will be a guest berth, a mooring, or at anchor. Overnight.* 11/24 ...

Our Sailing Resume

It's probably fair to provide our sailing resume before people with no sailing or even boating background trust us with their lives. My first sailing experience was in summer camp, sailing a Sunfish. I was in summer camp for a few weeks and got to sail every day. They didn't provide any training, they just turned me loose with the boat to figure it out on my own. By the third day, I had figured out sailing well enough I could get the Sunfish to plane, meaning it was going fast enough it rode over the water like a surfboard rather than in the water like a row boat. I was hooked.  After that I sailed every chance I got, mostly just Sunfish or similar boats. Solings rounding a course marker I lived in Bermuda for 1983 - 1984. I quickly found a permanent spot on a racing crew, manning the foredeck of a Soling. A Soling is a former Olympic class 29 foot racing boat. We raced the Soling every weekend for a full racing season finishing fourth in the nationals. I had ...

Why Sailing?

For retirement, do we choose sailing... ... or flying? Helga and I are both rapidly approaching retirement. I for one don't intend to go quietly into very old age, and Helga is usually game for at least my moderate adventures. Some of my passions earlier in life included flying, sailing, hiking/climbing, scuba diving, construction, travel, and baking. What to choose for early retirement? I'm down to one functioning lung as a result of a climbing accident in 2010. I can still ramble on down (or up) the trail, but my abilities for prolonged steep climbing, especially above 10,000 feet, are really limited. I can enjoy hiking, but seeking serious adventure through climbing is probably out. Baking is something I can pursue when I am too old for most other things. Construction is satisfying but not always fun. So as an activity in itself, plus as a platform for other activities, it came down to flying or sailing. I think it took Helga about 15 seconds to choose sa...

Going Sailing? What to bring...

If it's your first time sailing on the bay, or your first time sailing with us, you might like to know what to bring. I'll group these items as clothing and personal items. Clothing If you sail regularly, you probably have a USCG Type 3 or Type 5 personal flotation device (PFD) you like to wear when sailing. Please bring it. We have Type 2 lifejackets on board for everyone, but these are the type you might be familiar with from cruise ships; they are not very comfortable. We have a couple  water skiing vests which are a bit more comfortable, but you won't forget you are wearing it, like a typical Type 5 PFD. If we are going offshore, you will need to have your own vest that includes a harness attachment point. If you are unsure, check with us the week before sailing, and definitely before you go out and buy something. Our decks are light colored and easily pick up marks from shoes. Please bring something with white or light colored soles. If you want to walk around on...
